A Little History

The first meeting of the Mississippi Pharmaceutical Association was held on May 28, 1871. Matthew W. Ash, the first president, was vice president of the AmericanPharmaceutical Association.Mississippi was the sixth state to organize a state pharmaceutical association. The first law requiring a license to practice pharmacy was enacted in 1892, and the first Pharmacy Board of Examiners was appointed. In 1908, University of Mississippi School of Pharmacy was opened.

MPhA was incorporated in 1912, and in 1919 dues were raised to $3.00. In 1925, pharmacists' earned approximately 35 cents per hour. Membership reached 750 by 1957 and is double that amount today. MPhA is a group of committed professionals with a rich history of involvement in pharmacy issues on state and national levels.  In today's changing health care environment, it is critical that pharmacists' voices are heard and that pharmacy's interests are protected so that both the profession and the public may have the best in pharmacy care and service

Promote, and safeguard the public health and welfare.
Foster interprofessional relations among all members of the health care professions.
Promote the professional and economic welfare of all pharmacists.
Support education and licensure to guarantee competent practitioners worthy of the public's trust.
Maintain a code of ethics which will assure a high standard of professional conduct.
