Title: Gabapentin Potential for Abuse

Speaker: Jennifer L. Duncan, PharmD, BCGP

Duration: 1 hour

Pharmacist Objectives: 

  1. Identify types of nerve pain, treatment options and related risks including Beers Criteria.

  2. Discuss dosing and risk of gabapentin treatment for both FDA and off-label indications, with geriatric-specific differences.

  3. Understand why gabapentin abuse and dependence might occur when it has no affinity for the typical abuse receptor sites.

Pharmacist Objectives: 

  1. Outline the Core Elements of an Antibiotic Stewardship Program.

  2. Determine appropriate empiric antibiotic therapy for patients presenting with infectious diseases.

  3. Evaluate different strategies and tools to optimize antimicrobial therapy.

  4. Recommend an appropriate length of antibiotic treatment for managing patients with an identified source of infection.

Pharmacist Objectives:

  1. Identify the F-tags most cited in 2021and understand the LTC facility responsibility and risk of citation.

  2. Describe the F-tags related to pharmacy services and CMS’ requirements for the consultant pharmacist.

  3. Understand the role of the consultant pharmacist in reducing the risk of medication related F-tags.

  4. Discuss new F-tags related to COVID.

Title: Immunization Update: Who, What, When, and Why

Speaker: Olivia Strain, PharmD

Duration: 1 hour

Pharmacist Objectives:

  1. Summarize updated ACIP adult immunization recommendations. 

  2. Define shared clinical decision-making (SCDM) and its role in recommending immunizations.

  3. Examine data on coadministration of routine adult immunizations with COVID-19 vaccines.

  4. Identify promising new and/or future vaccines for use in the adult population.

Title: Focused Review of Common Biologics Utilized in Older Adults

Speaker: Kelly K. Stuart, PharmD, BCPS, CSP

Duration: 1 hour

Pharmacist Objectives: 

  1. Define concerns with common biologics for long-term usage (comorbidity impact, concerns in special populations, etc).

  2. Identify which elderly patients may be best served by biologic usage or implementation.

  3. Compare and contrast, where feasible, impact of care from biologic agents versus traditional non-biological agents from both a Quality of Life and Cost-Benefit perspectives.

  4. Quickly discuss items in specialty pipeline that may affect the elderly population going forward (i.e. aducanumab, biosimilars, etc.).

  1. Realize biopsychosocial principles of medicating older adult patients.

  2. Identify non-pharmacologic options for pain in older adult populations.

  3. Select appropriate pain medication options with consideration for risks related to older age.

  2. Discuss importance of optimization of heart failure therapy.

  3. Review newer medications available for treatment of heart failure.

  4. Discuss therapy options in patients with progressive heart failure.
