Pain Management in Older Adults

Speaker: Rebecca Heath, PharmD 

At the completion of this activity, the participant will be able to: 

1. Recall treatments for chronic pain 

2. Consider patient-specific factors for pain management for older adults 

3. Apply recommendations from the 2022 CDC Opioid Prescribing Guidelines to the care of patients

 

Appendix PP and the Role of the Consultant Pharmacist

Speaker: Brian Bell, RPh 

At the completion of this activity, the participant will be able to: 

1. Interpret the CMS State Operation Manuel and how it applies to the consultant pharmacist in the LTC setting 

2. State the duties of consultant pharmacists when assisting LTC facility staff navigate and meeting the expectations of the survey teams to improve drug therapy outcomes for residents

3. List the most recent CMS updates and guidance issued to surveyors and the LTC community

4. Describe policy changes that can be an asset for the LTC facility staff and residents

 

Antibiotics Aware: Practicing Antimicrobial Stewardship as a Consultant Pharmacist

Speaker: Jessica Everitt, PharmD 

At the completion of this activity, the participant will be able to: 

1. Identify fluoroquinolone prescribing practices that can reduce the risks associated with this class of drugs 

2. Recognize the inappropriate treatment of asymptomatic bacteriuria 

3. Describe the potential risks and benefits of prolonged antibiotic prophylaxis for urinary tract infections in nursing home patients

 

Cannabis and the Mississippi Elderly

Speakers: David Hudson, PharmD and Beau Cox, PharmD 

At the completion of this activity, the participant will be able to: 

1. State the laws that govern medical cannabis use in Mississippi 

2. Define common terms for marijuana and cannabis use 

3. Describe the endocannabinoid system and its functions 

4. Identity evidence regarding the safety and efficacy of cannabis use, especially in older adults

 

Sexually Transmitted Infections in Older Adults

Speaker: Jennifer Duncan, PharmD 

At the completion of this activity, the participant will be able to: 

1. Describe the physical, disease, and emotional factors that affect sexual health in older adults.

2. Determine types of sexually transmitted infections in older adults and explain why infection rates are increasing. 

3. Resolve and/or prevent medication-related problems when treating sexually transmitted infections in older adults. 

4. Given a case scenario, develop patient-centered therapy recommendations for sexually transmitted infections in older adults.

 

MPhA Consultant Seminar New Medication Update

Speakers: Adam Pate, PharmD and Natalie Montgomery, PharmD 

At the completion of this activity, the participant will be able to: 

1. Identify new therapeutic agents approved by FDA in 2021/2022 relevant to the care of older adults 

2. Discuss anticipated medications to be launched in 2022 

3. Summarize potential benefits and risks of new therapeutic agents

 

Updates from the Mississippi Board of Pharmacy

Speakers: Raymond Keith, RPh and Catina White, PharmD 

At the completion of this activity, the participant will be able to: 

1. Summarize the pharmacy inspection process 

2. Identify drug diversion awareness and prevention measures

3. Describe recent updates to regulations and laws related to the practice of pharmacy in the State of Mississippi

 

Don’t break my heart: A synopsis of the 2022 AHA/ACC/HFSA heart failure guidelines

Speakers: Ashley Hawthorne, PharmD and Elina Delgado, PharmD

At the completion of this activity, the participant will be able to: 

1. Distinguish the heart failure stage and classification based on symptoms and ejection fraction

2. Differentiate therapeutic options based on heart failure classification 

3. Design an appropriate treatment plan for an older adult with heart failure
